Noah Shapiro in Law360: Outside Counsel Relationships Built On Trust, GCs Say

Trust and rapport are paramount in successful relationships between law department heads and their outside counsel, panelists at an in-house counsel conference told a Tuesday gathering of law department attorneys and students.

The event at New York Law School brought together in-house professionals from 57 companies as well as representatives of government agencies for the school’s inaugural Institute for In-House Counsel conference.

Discussion topics were as varied as the fast-changing global regulatory environment, compliance department strategies and the nuances of negotiating real estate deals. But beyond legal issues like the recent onslaught of new financial filing requirements and “good guy” lease provisions, much of the conversation revolved around the importance of respect and institutional knowledge on both sides...

Neil Kessner, executive vice president and general counsel of publicly held real estate trust SL Green Realty Co., sat with Haynes and Boone LLP real estate partner Noah Shapiro, whom Kessner described as his “go to” counsel for the company’s high-volume real estate deals...

Shapiro and Kessner similarly described a relationship built over nearly 10 years and hundreds of real estate deals. That history, Shapiro said, allows him near total autonomy to negotiate for the company, and limits phone calls and emails with Kessner to only the essentials.
