Haynes and Boone's Newsroom
Chambers Latin America 2009 Recognizes Haynes and Boone
In its inaugural edition, Chambers Latin America has ranked Haynes and Boone, LLP as the only Texas-based firm among the leading international law firms conducting high-end, cross-border mergers and acquisitions and general corporate work for major clients.
Researchers noted that Brazil, Colombia and Peru have become a focus of the Haynes and Boone team. The firm, Chambers pointed out, recently advised Peruvian consortium Irradia in an US$82 million credit agreement with German banks to finance an LNG plant in that country.
Chambers also cited the firm’s work in Brazil, where it acted as international counsel for MMX Mineração e Metálicos S.A. (MMX), in connection with the financing of an integrated iron-ore mining and infrastructure logistics project relating to MMX's Amapá mining facility. The MMX financing, which consisted of a three-tranche facility aggregating US$250MM in bank facilities and R$580,000,000 of financing from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), was named one of Trade Finance magazine's 2007 “Deals of the Year."
Chambers researchers also noted that Haynes and Boone has been “extremely visible in Central America,” particularly in Costa Rica where Larry B. Pascal, chair of the firm’s Americas Practice Group, has represented several investor groups developing the tourist hotspot of Guanacaste.
“This prestigious recognition further highlights Haynes and Boone’s commitment to building and maintaining a strong Latin American presence,” said Mr. Pascal. “In today’s global business environment, clients expect comprehensive solutions from their legal teams. With 50 lawyers in our overall Latin American practice, we are able to deploy our Mexican resources in transactions throughout Latin America.”
Also singled out for recognition was Mexico City partner Antonio Franck, a “renowned” corporate attorney in a Haynes and Boone office that “has built up a strong offering in securities, finance, real estate and mainstream M&A.”
In Mexico Banking and Finance, the publication recognized Mr. Franck as “an authority in the sector on account of his extensive experience in historic IPOs and general finance matters.” And in Mexico Corporate/M&A, researchers said, Mr. Franck remains a top, “go-to lawyer.” Chambers noted that Haynes and Boone recently advised Mexican investor Grupo Saba on its tender offer for Aeromexico, the first of its kind under new legislation.
Chambers Latin America ranks law firms and attorneys based on in-depth interviews conducted with sector peers and firm clients. Ratings are based on legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial awareness, diligence, and commitment to the client. For this inaugural edition of Chambers Latin America, more than 40 researchers spent six months spanning Latin America.
The Haynes and Boone Latin American practice has been recognized as one of the leaders in Latin America by numerous business organizations and publications, including Latin Lawyer and Chambers USA. The firm has lawyers licensed in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Peru working in its offices.
As part of its Latin American practice, Haynes and Boone maintains one of the largest Mexico City practices of any U.S. law firm. Its approximately 20 Mexico City-based attorneys have a wide range of experience in handling the legal aspects of international business, foreign investment, trade regulation, project finance, infrastructure, litigation and arbitration. They are also active in community service. Latin Lawyer ranked the Haynes and Boone practice attorneys 11th in pro bono commitment in Latin America, and fourth in Mexico.
