Clark Stone: A new patent office -- in Detroit? It should be in Silicon Valley

Later this year, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will open the doors to its first outside-the-Beltway office. The patent examiners are going to be in the middle of an innovative community, with strong research universities and scientists and a high volume of patent applications, patent lawyers and agents.

The new office will be (drum roll) in Detroit.

No disrespect to the Motor City, Michigan's institutions of higher learning and the automotive industry, but the first patent satellite office should be in Silicon Valley.
