Haynes and Boone Washington Office Wins First Pro Bono Asylum Case
08/22/2011

WASHINGTON – On Aug. 16, the Haynes and Boone, LLP Washington, D.C., office won its first pro bono asylum case. Lawyers Maryam Khosharay and Nora Whitehead took on the case, which involved a foreign journalist who had to flee his country because he had the courage to speak out against his government. On a number of occasions, the client was imprisoned, beaten and spent weeks on end in solitary confinement.

In March 2011, he escaped on a visitor's visa to the U.S. and sought asylum. The case was referred to the Haynes and Boone D.C. office via Human Rights First, and it represented the client in developing his case. As an asylee, he is now entitled to work, seek benefits, apply for his green card and, most importantly, live in freedom.

Ms. Khosharay is an associate in the firm’s Finance Practice and Ms. Whitehead is an associate in the firm’s White Collar Criminal Defense Practice.
