Huntington Beach Inventor Wins Prestigious Award for GPS Chip
05/07/2010
Ever rely on GPS to get you to where you're going? You can thank Steve Chen and Sanjai Kohli for that.
Chen, of Huntington Beach, and his co-inventor Kohli have won the European Inventor Award for 2010 "Non-European Countries" from the European Patent Organization for the chip they created that revolutionized GPS technology to make it more attainable for consumers. Chen and Kohli were recognized at a recent ceremony in Madrid, Spain.
"We were very surprised but very honored to be receiving the award," Chen said. "It was quite a prestigious award."
The Chen-Kohli chip allows improved communication between satellites and the computer system so navigating is quicker and more efficient. The chip was the foundation for GPS technology consumers use today, Chen said.
Chen now works to help other inventors protect their work as a patent lawyer for Haynes and Boone, a Dallas-based corporate law firm with offices in Orange County. He said he is proud of his work and hopes he continues to help other inventors contribute to society.
"I'm just very honored to be able to have a role in this process, as both an inventor and attorney, to promote and protect the inventions and hopefully to help the economy to grow," he said.
