Rita Irani Joins Downtown Houston YMCA Board of Directors and Leads Community Council

HOUSTON – Haynes and Boone, L.L.P., an international corporate law firm, announced that Rita Irani, an attorney with the Firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Downtown Houston YMCA, and also as Chair of its Community Council. Ms. Irani will serve in both of these positions until 2006. She has been a member and volunteer with the organization for many years.

YMCA of Greater Houston maintains 33 branches serving over 80,000 people every day.  The continuing mission of the Downtown YMCA is to improve the quality of life of its members and community physically, mentally, spiritually and socially through health, wellness and development programs for families and individuals of all ages. As a Board member, Ms. Irani will help develop policy for the downtown location. As Chair of the Community Council, Ms. Irani’s role is to oversee all of the community service functions provided by the Downtown YMCA staff, including after school care programs, active senior citizen programs , youth day camps and sports activities, services for residents of the Downtown Houston YMCA, and supportive services for disadvantaged adults served by the Downtown YMCA.

Ms. Irani has extensive experience in protecting and enforcing all types of intellectual property for companies ranging from large corporations to start ups and entrepreneurs.  She assists clients in minimizing the risks of litigating intellectual property disputes while maximizing the benefits of intellectual property ownership through carefully planned protection and enforcement strategies. Ms. Irani is a Registered Patent Attorney.

Ms. Irani is a member of the State Bar of Texas and Houston Bar Association, serving on both organizations’ Intellectual Property Law committees. She is also a member of  the International Trademark Association, will be teaching the Madrid Protocol 101 Seminar for INTA in Houston in December, and  she serves on the Editorial Board for Trademark Reporter. She also served eight years as an editor of the International Trademark Association’s Annual International Trademark Review. Ms. Irani earned her B.S. in Physics from Carnegie Institute of Technology of Carnegie Mellon University in 1970. She earned her J.D. cum laude from Duquesne University in 1982.
