University of Texas School of Law Appoints Jeff Civins to Advisory Board for Center Focusing on Energy and Environmental Law

04/21/2009

Jeff Civins, chair of the Haynes and Boone, LLP, Environmental Practice and Climate Change and Corporate Sustainability Groups, has accepted an invitation to serve on the advisory board of the newly-formed Center for Global Energy, International Arbitration and Environmental Law at the University of Texas School of Law.

The Center will promote and sponsor collaborative research, critical discussion, policy analyses, and hands-on clinical experience in the areas of energy, the environment, and international arbitration, three crucially interrelated and timely areas of focus. Mr. Civins was selected for his more than 30 years of experience and leadership in environmental law.

“Texas is the largest producing state for oil and gas and wind power, as well as greenhouse gases, and home to a number of multinational oil and gas companies. These facts, together with its leading energy and environmental law faculties, make the University of Texas uniquely situated to establish the Center,” said Civins. “I look forward to being associated with the Center as it addresses critical issues and educates future leaders in the intersecting areas of energy and environmental law.”

The Center for Global Energy, International Arbitration and Environmental Law will offer a new concentration in energy, international arbitration and environmental law to its Masters of Law students, will add full-time teachers to the faculty and will attract scholars from around the world to teach and affiliate with the university on a part-time or visiting basis.

The Center will join forces with the School of Engineering, Jackson School of Geosciences and the LBJ School of Public Affairs to conduct research, publish law review articles and white papers, and host conferences and workshops to explore important issues and discuss emerging ideas.

The advisory board includes leaders in the public and private sectors in the areas of energy, the environment, and international dispute resolution, including representatives of leading multinational energy companies and distinguished professors from the law school.

Jeff Civins has practiced all aspects of environmental law since 1975. In his practice at Haynes and Boone, he advises clients on regulatory requirements, assists them in the evaluation and negotiation of corporate transactions, and represents them in environmental and toxic tort litigation. He also assists them in dealing with the challenges posed by climate change and society’s response to it.

As an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law, Mr. Civins has taught a seminar on environmental litigation each spring since 1992. He is co-editor of the Thomson West Texas Practice 2-volume treatise on Texas Environmental Law and is a frequent author and speaker on environmental and climate change issues. He is a former chair of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and standing chair of its Annual Texas Environmental Superconference.
