Haynes and Boone Repeats as Euromoney Best National Firm for Diversity, Mary Mendoza Named Best in Environment Law for 2015

06/08/2015

For the second straight year, Haynes and Boone, LLP has been named the “Best National Firm for Diversity” in North America by the Americas Women in Business Law Awards. The firm received that honor and two others during a New York City ceremony held June 3 by the Euromoney Legal Media Group.

“To repeat in this national recognition of our firm’s overall diversity achievements is a tremendous testament to the hard work of our Attorney Diversity and Inclusion Committee (ADIC),” said Madelyn Calabrese, ADIC co-chair.  “It is great that outside organizations see the results of our efforts to strengthen and create programs that elevate our diverse lawyers. We are very proud.”

Nick Even, ADIC co-chair, added: “We appreciate the recognition and accept it as a challenge for the future.  As a committee and as a firm we remain committed to fostering new and innovative diversity programs that keep our firm on the vanguard of hiring, promoting and retaining outstanding diverse legal talent, including women lawyers.”

Haynes and Boone also received recognition as the Best Law Firm (U.S. South), and in the individual awards category, Austin Partner Mary Mendoza won Best in Environment.

“All three of these Euromoney awards are well-deserved,” said Tim Powers, Haynes and Boone managing partner. “The ADIC leadership has been relentless in providing new opportunities and programs that help us internally promote our women and nurture diversity throughout the firm, and Mary Mendoza is certainly a very worthy recipient of the Best in Environment title, as her clients attest daily. Congratulations to all for these very high tributes.”

Highlighted at the awards ceremony was Haynes and Boone’s Minority Associate Connections program, which pairs   associates and leaders in the firm for formal and informal mentoring, as well as periodic programming and training.  Additional firm programs, such as the Women’s Leadership Academy, an initiative designed to help guide and coach women who are nearing partnership consideration; an annual Women Partners’ Summit, a networking and career enhancing opportunity for female partners; and Women’s Lunches/Presentations in all offices providing an opportunity for female lawyers to discuss hot topics including talent development, communication and leadership skills, were also recognized as part of the overall firm’s diversity efforts.

The firm also has a Working Parents subcommittee to help develop policies and programs designed to support the unique challenges of working partners. The subcommittee offers guidance and resources to working parents, ranging from advice on childrearing issues and school referrals to work/life balance best practices.

Haynes and Boone has received various accolades for its diversity inclusion programs. Honors include the prestigious Thomas L. Sager Award in 2013, presented by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association in recognition of the firm’s commitment to diversity, and a Gold Standard Certification from the Women in Law Empowerment Forum for four consecutive years. The firm was also recognized as winner of the 2014 Diversity Leader Award presented by the Profiles in Diversity Journal. The ADIC includes more than 60 lawyers, management and administrative team members and has seven sub-committees that regularly engage with clients, colleagues, the surrounding communities and within the firm on diversity and inclusion initiatives. The committee develops programs, with the goal of advancing the hiring, retention and promotion of diverse lawyers in the firm.
