Legislative Review Series Attracts Lawyers and Clients

07/07/2015

In a recent three-day period, Haynes and Boone, LLP staged a series of four Texas Legislative Review panel discussions featuring Of Counsel and District 103 State Representative Rafael Anchia, moderator Evan Smith of The Texas Tribune and a legislator from each venue.

The events attracted about 200 Haynes and Boone clients and lawyers interested in an overview of the key issues and new laws arising from the just-concluded 84th legislative session. With more than 6,000 bills introduced and more than 1,500 bills put up for a vote, there was much to discuss.

At the Dallas stop for the panel road show, Anchia and Smith were joined by Linda Koop, a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives serving District 102. The discussion quickly turned to state budget issues and the priorities that emerged from the Republican-dominated Texas House and Senate.

Audiences in Houston, Austin and San Antonio heard similar wide-ranging discussions.

In Houston, Anchia, Smith and Republican Sarah Davis, a two-term state representative serving District 134, discussed the legislature’s reticence to get involved in overhauling public school funding methods in light of on-going litigation over its constitutionality.

With the help of Republican Paul Workman, who represents Austin’s District 47, and Democratic Senator José Menéndez of San Antonio, the panels covered a variety of subjects, including tax relief, border security, ethics and gun laws.

The latest panels were part of the second biennial series of pre- and post-legislative session events sponsored by Haynes and Boone in the interest of promoting a more informed electorate.
