Veteran Energy and Natural Resources Lawyer Nicolas Borda Moves to Haynes and Boone Mexico City

02/03/2016

Haynes and Boone, LLP proudly announces the hiring of well-known energy and natural resources practitioner Nicolas Borda as partner in the Mexico City office, building on recent growth stemming from the adoption of Mexico energy and infrastructure reforms.

Borda focuses his practice on all facets of oil and gas (upstream, midstream and downstream), power and renewable and other alternative energy projects. Licensed in both Mexico and New York, he advises clients in international and cross-border transactions, regulatory, mergers and acquisitions, energy infrastructure project development and real estate matters, government procurement, public policy and dispute resolution.

“The addition of Nicolas broadens our capability to handle complex energy-related transactions on both sides of the Mexico border,” said Partner Alberto de la Peña, who heads the U.S.-Mexico Cross-Border practice. “With the reforms now being implemented throughout the country, our clients will be well-served by his extensive experience.”

Added Luis Moreno, Mexico City office administrative partner: “Our lawyers could not be more enthusiastic in welcoming Nicolas to the office. They are excited to have access to his ample talents, which are a wonderful fit with our current bench of talent.”

Borda said the depth of the firm’s energy practice was enticing. “I am delighted to be joining the Mexico City office to work with such a strong energy practice,” he said. “My clients and practice nicely complement what is already established within Haynes and Boone.”

Borda has been ranked by Chambers and Partners as Band 1 in energy and natural resources in Mexico, and currently chairs the Energy Committee of the National Association of Corporate Counsels.

He currently represents companies involved in the Round One public auctions of hydrocarbon blocks being conducted by the National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) and with Pemex affiliate joint ventures. Borda has also been active in Round One for production-sharing contracts and licensing agreements before the CNH and downstream regulatory issues before the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).

Haynes and Boone Mexico has seen significant growth recently with the recruitment and promotion of a number of partners, counsel and associates. Most recently, the firm announced the arrival of Counsel Tom Heather, a lawyer with a rich background in energy and infrastructure projects.

Earlier this year, the firm also announced the elevation to partner of Gerardo Carrillo, who has significant experience in the Mexican market serving various industries and clients, most notably in multiple M&A and development transactions with industrial, commercial, residential and hospitality properties in Mexico.

Borda joins a Mexico City office that has served the region for more than 20 years. The fully-integrated Mexico City office was established in 1994. Haynes and Boone is one of the most active U.S. law firms operating in Mexico, serving a growing list of international clientele. The Mexico Practice Group of the law firm is one of the largest multi-disciplinary Mexico practice groups in the AmLaw 100 consisting of lawyers in multiple offices serving clients both in the Mexican market and outbound out of Mexico with a teamwork oriented approach to client-first service.  Haynes and Boone is unique in having permanent senior Mexican lawyers based in its U.S. offices and conversely having an American expatriate working in its Mexico City office, thereby providing integrated working teams from both its U.S. and Mexican platforms.

Haynes and Boone lawyers are frequent speakers and quoted authorities on the business to be generated with the adoption of Mexico energy and infrastructure reforms, which could attract as much as $1.2 trillion in economic activity to the region in the next decade, according to a BBVA Compass economist.
