Hector Herrera Assumes Senior Leadership Role in Mexican Bar Association

02/23/2017

Hector Herrera, a partner in Haynes and Boone, LLP’s Mexico City office, has begun a two-year term as first vice-president of the Mexican Bar Association (MBA).

His term will run through February 23, 2019 at which time he will become president of the MBA. The association has about 5,000 members and handles vital functions in Mexico, including defending the interests of the country’s legal profession and serving as an advisor to the federal government. The MBA will play a key role in advising the government about any potential changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement, particularly any revisions that would affect the legal profession.

Among other duties, Herrera will serve as a liaison between the MBA and other bar organizations in Mexico and abroad, including the American Bar Association and International Bar Association. His presidential term will also last two years, from 2019 to 2021.

“I’m very excited to begin my term as first vice-president,” Herrera said. “The job will involve providing leadership to the legal community in Mexico along with the huge responsibility of contributing to the enforcement of the rule of law in Mexico and to ensuring justice for all.”

Herrera has more than 29 years of experience practicing law in Mexico, with particular expertise in environmental law, water law, and administrative litigation. He focuses his practice on various industries, including mining, chemicals, petrochemicals, hydrocarbons, rail roads, food and beverages, real estate developments, hydraulic resources and infrastructure.

Herrera is featured in the 2017 Chambers Latin America directory as one of the leading environmental lawyers in Mexico. Chambers Latin America has been ranking law firms and attorneys based on in-depth interviews with sector peers and firm clients since 1999. Rankings are based on legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial awareness, diligence and commitment to the client.

Haynes and Boone has been on the ground in Mexico City for more than 22 years, serving a growing list of domestic and international clients.
