Albert Tan Addresses Subscription Financing and Legal Industry Trends in April Seminars

05/08/2018

Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Albert Tan spoke at two seminars in April, one involving oil & gas financing and the second covering a range of legal industry topics of interest to lawyers of Asian-Pacific Islander heritage in Texas.

On April 10, Tan participated in a Haynes and Boone-hosted seminar at the firm’s New York office that explored the structures and methods that private equity funds use to raise, leverage and deploy capital in the energy sector. Tan, who co-chairs the firm’s Fund Finance and International Practice Groups, addressed the particular role that subscription financing can play in energy financing and investments. The panelists, who included Haynes and Boone Partners Jeff Nichols, Buddy Clark and Vicki Odette, also discussed the findings of the firm’s spring 2018 Borrowing Base Redeterminations Survey, which polled borrowers and lenders to glean their views about the state of the energy lending market.

On April 27, Tan moderated a panel discussion at the 23rd Annual Conference of the Asian Pacific Interest Section (APIS) of the State Bar of Texas. Tan has served in a leadership capacity for the Asia Society Texas and the Dallas Asian American Bar Association. The APIS event, held in Austin, explored such topics as international human rights, immigration compliance and intellectual property trends. Tan moderated a discussion that touched on the opportunities and challenges arising from lateral market moves by lawyers. The other panelists were: DLA Piper Partner Elise Green; King & Spalding Partner Cindy Lin; Larry Scott, a principal at legal recruiter Lateral Link; and Orrick Associate Cathleen Chang.

Tan is a member of Haynes and Boone’s Board of Directors and formerly co-chaired the firm’s Attorney Development and Diversity Committee. He regularly represents investment and commercial banks in connection with bank financings for private equity funds in Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America. He also counsels U.S. and Chinese corporations on foreign direct investment projects in China and the United States. He frequently speaks on fund finance at legal and business seminars and was named a leading practitioner in international private equity by the Euromoney Expert Guide (Legal Media Group) in 2012.

Among the lending clients Tan has represented are: Bank of America, Bank of Communications, Citibank, Comerica, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Goldman Sachs Bank, Itaú Unibanco S.A., Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Mizuho Corporate Bank, Morgan Stanley Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd., United Overseas Bank, US Trust and Wells Fargo Bank.
