Haynes and Boone Advises American Airlines on Historic Service to Cuba

04/05/2017

A team of Haynes and Boone, LLP lawyers advised American Airlines Group in connection with the April commencement of American Eagle flight service, operated by Republic Airlines, from Miami to Camaguey and Cienfuegos, Cuba.

The matter is a continuation of the firm’s representation of American in 2016 on its first-ever scheduled passenger service to Cuba. The opening of scheduled flight service to Cuba (previously only charter service was available) was a byproduct of historic, bilateral negotiations between Cuba and the U.S.

In connection with this important engagement, Dallas Partner Larry B. Pascal led a team of lawyers from the Dallas, Mexico City, and Washington D.C. offices of the firm, including Foreign Counsel Patricia Mastropierro; Foreign Associates César Ramirez, Pablo Sansot, and Pamela Alvarado, and Washington, D.C. Attorney Scott Benfield.

The firm has been advising American since 2016 on the planning of its operations to Cuba, which commenced in September 2016 and was expanded to Havana in November of last year. The foreign investment by American is arguably one of the most important by a U.S. company since the Cuban Revolution, given the airline’s American’s service to the island. American has the most air service to Cuba of any foreign airline and currently serves Havana, Varadero, Camaguey, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, and Holguin.

As in its prior cross-border engagements for American, the firm advised the company on a variety of matters in Cuba, including corporate and commercial matters, tax, regulatory, and labor.

The firm has a leading Latin American practice and has been recognized by Chambers Latin America, Chambers & Partners, 2017; Latin Lawyer, Latinvex, 2017; and Latinvex, 2016, for the work in the region.
