Haynes and Boone Honored for Pro Bono Work in Orange County

June 12, 2017

Haynes and Boone LLP will be honored as pro bono law firm of the year by Orange County’s Public Law Center at the Volunteers for Justice Dinner in Irvine on June 19.

The firm is being recognized for its many pro bono efforts in recent years, including its 2015 representation of clients who successfully enjoined the City of Costa Mesa from evicting low-income residents from motels. The case stemmed from an ordinance that barred motels from renting a room longer than 30 days. Haynes and Boone said its clients, long-term motel residents who lacked the resources or credit to move, challenged the ordinance on a variety of alleged grounds, including housing discrimination.

“This award speaks to the significant individual efforts made by our lawyers and, more broadly, the great support and sacrifice of the firm in the name of pro bono legal services for the disadvantaged,” said Haynes and Boone partner Mark Erickson, who worked on the Costa Mesa matter and is a member of the Public Law Center’s board of directors. Other lawyers in Haynes and Boone’s Orange County office who have devoted considerable time to assisting the Public Law Center include partners Kimberly Chase, Kenneth Parker and Mary-Christine Sungaila and associates David Clark, Matthew Costello, Allan Gustin and Christopher Maciel.

“In other words,” Erickson said,” the pro bono award is in recognition of a total team effort by our Orange County office.”
