Haynes and Boone Partners Ranked Among World's Top Patent Lawyers by IAM Patent 1000

June 26, 2018

Haynes and Boone, LLP and seven of its partners, located coast-to-coast from California to Texas to Washington, D.C., were recognized in the 2018 edition of the independently-researched Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Patent 1000 legal directory.

The IAM Patent 1000 is designed to shine a spotlight on the firms and individuals that are deemed outstanding in the patent practice. IAM interviewed more than 1,800 patent lawyers and in-house counsel, over a five-month period, in deciding which firms and lawyers to include in the directory.

“When it comes to providing an end-to-end patent service, few in the country do so brilliant a job as Haynes and Boone,” IAM said. Having filed in excess of 10,000 US patent applications in the past five years, researchers added, the firm’s IP Transactions team is “one of the top filers of inter partes reviews on behalf of petitioners, with a 95% institution rate and a 97% claim cancellation rate.”

Partners Randy Brown, Tom Chen, Randall Colson, David McCombs, Phillip Philbin, Mark Tidwell, and Jeffrey Wolfson were all acclaimed by peers and clients as “top-players” in the field.

In Texas, Haynes and Boone ranked as a recommended firm for IP transactions and litigation and as one of four “highly recommended” firms for patent prosecution.

In California, Haynes and Boone was rated as a recommended firm for patent prosecution in recognition of “the prestigious client base they serve, and of the gold-standard patent protection advice they provide.”

Chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Department, Randall Brown was praised for “providing strong leadership to the 124-strong department.”

Researchers said that Washington, D.C., Partner Jeffrey Wolfson, chair of the firm’s Patent Prosecution practice, “garners superlative reviews from the patrons who know him best.” IAM quoted a source who said: “Of all the IP attorneys I have dealt with, Jeff is certainly the best. I have total confidence that he has our best interests in mind at all times, commercially and financially. With him, our filings have become much stronger, which I’m noticing clearly in interacting with potential strategic partners.”

Tom Chen, a partner in the firm’s Orange County office, was described as a “lodestar for large clients” and as someone who supervises hand-picked teams of attorneys and agents and possesses “a hawk’s eye for quality.”

Randy Colson, head of the firm’s Technology Transactions and Technology Mergers and Acquisitions Practice Groups, was described as being “at the forefront” of Haynes and Boone’s transactional endeavors and was hailed as someone who can “reliably be found cutting deals” for “technology vanguards.”

Accolades for Partner David McCombs include “reliably top notch;” “critically assesses issues with precision;” “is one of the best in the post-grant arena,” and “a great lawyer substantively, [who] is a customer-oriented and service-minded professional with a can-do attitude.”

Researchers called Partner Phillip Philbin a “tactically astute and even-keeled litigator who is a quick study on technology”.

Additionally, Partner Mark Tidwell, who leads the firm’s Houston IP practice, was recognized as a “prosecution and transactions pro.”
