Asian Pacific Interest Section of State Bar Recognizes Albert Tan's Service

The Asian Pacific Interest Section (APIS) of the State Bar of Texas has recognized Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Albert Tan as Council Member of the Year for 2018-2019 for his dedication, commitment and service to the section.

Leaders of the organization honored Tan during a reception at APIS’s 24th Annual Conference in Austin on April 26. APIS was created to be a statewide umbrella organization to advocate and promote the common professional interests of lawyers of Asian-Pacific American heritage and those interested in its community culture. In addition, the section seeks to use its members’ legal skills to promote Asian interests and concerns in both public and private forums throughout the state.

Tan has served as Council Member of the section since 2011. In 2015, he was presented with the Justice Wellington Chew Award, the highest honor awarded by APIS. This distinction is reserved for a lawyer who has paved the way for the advancement of other Asian Pacific American attorneys and made lasting contributions to the APA legal profession and community. Award recipients demonstrate vision, courage and tenacity in their practice, and are recognized for their outstanding professional achievements and leadership.

Tan joined Haynes and Boone in 1994 and became a partner in the firm’s Financial Transactions Department in 2004. In addition to serving as co-chair of the Fund Finance Practice Group, he also serves as a member of the Board of Directors, Partners’ Compensation Committee and Strategic Growth Committee. He previously was a co-chair of the firm’s Attorney Development and Diversity Committee and served on the Lateral Partner Hiring Committee. From 1997 to 2000, Tan was based in Hong Kong and served on a secondment to Caltex Petroleum (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chevron), as its chief counsel for Greater China.

During his 25-year career at the firm, Tan has represented investment and commercial banks, as agents and arrangers in approximately $50 billion of fund financing to Asia, US, Europe, Latin America and global real estate, infrastructure, debt, buyout and energy private equity funds, including some of the first real estate private equity funds in Japan, Greater China, Singapore and Korea and some of the largest global infrastructure funds and Asia-focused buyout funds, and he was named a leading practitioner in international private equity by the Euromoney Expert Guide (Legal Media Group) in 2012.

Tan is a graduate of San Diego State University (BA), Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law (JD) and Georgetown University Law Center (LL.M.) and speaks Mandarin.
