In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Congress and the White House felt compelled to strengthen the nation’s defense against terrorism. Although most agree that the law needed changes to combat terrorism, disagreement exists on the extent the laws should restrict our personal freedoms.
 
The “USA Patriot Act,” signed into law Oct. 26, vastly expands the authority of law enforcement to monitor private communications and personal information.
