Houston Lawyer Guest Article: Linda Marshall The Beauty of Words

10/28/2014

These are just a few of the words in the extensive repertoire of Linda Marshall, a family law practitioner, who has won the Houston Center of Literacy's Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee so often that she will soon be retired into a new established Hall of Fame. Marshall participates as a member of the Houston Bar Associaton's Lawyers for Literacy team. Due in large part to Marshall's participation, the team obtained its 11th first place title this year.

Marshall's gift for spelling is born from her love of language, a voracious appetite for reading, and a nearly photographic memory. She describes words as a "treasure trove" that can reveal layers of history. Indeed, Marshall can conform even common words into cultural lessons. For example, did you know that the word "money" is a reference to the temple of the goddess Juno Moneta, where Roman coins were first minted? This is just a drop of Marshall's knowledge.
