Latin Lawyer - Haynes and Boone Targets Tax Practice in latest Mexico Hire Klee

03/04/2015

Haynes and Boone SC has recruited tax partner Edgar Klee from a local boutique, further evidence of Mexican firms’ increased demand for tax practitioners.

Klee, 42, joined the firm on 24 February. He made the move from Turanzas, Bravo & Ambrosi, the firm he helped found, after leaving another Mexican tax boutique, Ortiz, Sainz y Erreguerena, in 2005. He joins months after Haynes and Boone hired two partners and one counsel in its corporate finance and M&A, capital markets and environment practices.

Haynes and Boone managing partner Luis Moreno says Klee’s hire is part of the firm’s continued efforts to tap into increased client demand as a result of Mexico’s structural reforms. “His experience with complex tax issues will especially benefit cross-border clients who are entering the Mexican marketplace as our government loosens restrictions on key sectors,” he explains. “Edgar is a great fit for these exciting times.”

In recent years, Mexico has overhauled its energy and telecoms sectors, and passed antitrust legislation aimed at promoting competition in the country, contributing to an increase in demand for tax counsel. “[We] believe having a sophisticated tax planning and litigation practice in Mexico City will help bring in more work from current clients,” says Moreno, adding that Haynes and Boone is keen to position itself as a full-service firm. Currently, the Mexico City office is best-known for its banking and finance, real estate and project finance capabilities.
