Debra Hatter in the San Antonio Business Journal: Eagle Ford Shale boom prompting a rush of M&A activity

Merger and acquisition activity is booming as South Texas’ Eagle Ford Shale emerges as one of the nation’s hottest petroleum plays, according to industry observers.

The play, which stretches across 24 Texas counties south of San Antonio, is expected to generate billions of dollars in economic activity as energy companies access its largely untapped petroleum reserves. With prices strong for oil and natural-gas liquids, much of that activity is taking the shape of a buying spree.

“I’m kind of surprised at the level of activity,” says Debra Gatison Hatter, a partner with Haynes and Boone LLP in Houston, who handles M&A work. “We’re not only seeing U.S. companies putting together deals, but also foreign companies. It’s been a seller’s market so far.”...

And the majors aren't the only ones playing the game. Hatter says she is also seeing small and mid-sized companies enter the rush, especially as they identify new technologies and services in demand across Eagle Ford and other shale plays.
