Haynes and Boone, LLP has hired away a former director of Deloitte LLP's Washington national tax practice group, who will be joining the firm's Dallas office as a tax partner.
Michael DePompei focuses his tax practice on complex matters in the partnership, real estate and tax-exempt areas, according to a news release the firm issued Monday announcing his hiring. He has provided federal income tax advice to clients ranging from partnerships, real estate investment trusts, tax-exempt organizations, corporations and individuals.
DePompei had been with Deloitte since October 2011, where he advised Deloitte offices worldwide on federal income tax treatment of partnerships, real estate investment trusts and tax-exempt organizations. He told Law360 on Thursday that during that time he was commuting back and forth between the nation's capital and Dallas frequently. That the move to Haynes and Boone would afford him more time with his family, and less time commuting, was one of the things that made the job appealing, he said.
DePompei said he wasn't looking for a new job when he was approached by Haynes and Boone, but that the move made sense for several reasons, including, he said, the “fantastic attorneys” he'll be working with, whose skill sets complement each others' in serving clients.
“I like the collaborative environment,” he said. “I like the complex partnership work. I feel like its a growing firm and seemed like a great opportunity.”
