Haynes and Boone has added 27 attorneys and professionals from intellectual property boutique MacPherson, Kwok, Chen & Heid to open its first offices in California.

The deal, which became effective on Feb. 1, adds MacPherson's offices in San Jose and Irvine, Calif., to Haynes and Boone.

Terry Conner, managing partner of Haynes and Boone, said the firm has been looking to open offices in California since 2007, in large part because of the state's focus on technology clients.

"That focus on technology and IP was a real draw for us," he said. With the combination, Haynes and Boone will have 70 lawyers in its intellectual property group, both in patent prosecution and litigation, he said.

As part of the combination, Paul Searles, a partner at Haynes and Boone's Dallas office, will relocate to California to serve as liaison to the West Coast offices. Joining the firm are name partners Tom Chen and Edward C. Kwok, both of whom have master's degrees in electrical engineering, and partners Jonathan Hallman, Jennifer Lantz, Steve Levitan, Greg Michelson and Clark Stone.
