Q: How did you break into what many consider to be an old boys’ network?

A: My ability to break into the old boys’ network was a result of actions taken by the women who came before me. I graduated from law school in 1977, but the women who graduated the year before (1976), even though at the top of their class, couldn’t find jobs in Dallas. They were courageous and instituted a class action against many of the Dallas firms who had refused to even interview them. When I came along the next year, the firms were looking for women largely as a means of defending against the suit. The doors were wide open to me. I just had to choose the right firm and make sure they were hiring me for the right reason. But I had the ability to make it my choice.
