Jennifer Reddien and Jade Laye in Managing IP: 'Five Ways IP Firms Furthered Diversity and Inclusion Last Year'

January 19, 2021
Haynes and Boone, LLP’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Jennifer Reddien and Intellectual Property (IP) Partner Jade Laye talked with Managing IP about the firm’s efforts to improve diversity and inclusion in 2020.

Counsel in at least five top U.S. firms say they’re very proud of the changes their firms made after May 2020, including the numerous affinity groups and solid mentorship programmes created, communication improvements and widened recruitment nets, among other things.

“It’s been very encouraging to see all the efforts the firm has made,” says Jade Laye, partner at Haynes and Boone in Houston. “It’s made me feel much more comfortable because I feel like the firm leadership is in my corner.”

Haynes and Boone created a task force for that purpose in 2020, which recently made 11 recommendations to the firm’s board to make the business a fairer and more compassionate place to work.

“This is one of the things that distinguishes us from other firms,” says Jennifer Reddien, director of diversity and inclusion at Haynes and Boone in Dallas. “We took a deep dive into our firm’s culture to find out what we were doing and what types of diversity initiatives we had and how we could improve them.”

The board has approved the recommendations, and the firm will implement them soon, Reddien said

Communication and Training Overhaul

Alongside their affinity group restructures, Finnegan, Sterne Kessler, Morrison & Foerster, Fish & Richardson and Haynes and Boone also revamped their diversity and inclusion communications strategies in 2020.
