Haynes and Boone, LLP is proud to support this lecture by His Excellency Ebrahim Rasool Ambassador of South Africa to the United States, a part of the 60th Anniversary Lecture Series.

Ebrahim Rasool became ambassador of South Africa to the United States on Aug. 4, 2010. He most recently served as a member of Parliament in the National Assembly, special advisor to the State President of the Republic of South Africa, and as premier, or governor, of the Western Cape Province. Ambassador Rasool has a long history of involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle, including leadership roles in the United Democratic Front (UDF) and African National Congress (ANC).

His social and political involvement has consistently been faith-driven, and he has been involved in both the Islamic movement as well as the interfaith movement. In addition, Ambassador Rasool has extensive government service, leading various departments such as health, welfare, finance and economic development.

As premier of the Western Cape, he was instrumental in attracting foreign investment into the province worth approximately $1 billion and making significant strides toward the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Ambassador Rasool has also been awarded a number of honors, including the 2008 Visionary Leadership and Public Good Award from the World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists; the Award for Commitment and Leadership in Fight Against Crime from Business Against Crime; the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights presented by the Kaiser Family Foundation; and the Foreign Direct Investment Africa Personality of the Year Award by the London Financial Times.

Ambassador Rasool received a bachelor’s of arts degree and higher diploma in education from the University of Cape Town. He is married with two children.
