San Francisco lawyers Roger Kuan and Jason Novak have joined Haynes and Boone, LLP, where they will create and develop a cutting-edge practice representing clients in emerging technologies including precision medicine, digital health, medical devices, and 3D printing/bioprinting.
Roger and Jason have extensive experience handling intellectual property transactions in private practice and as in-house counsel for a multinational bio-technology company. They regularly lead teams that provide clients — both start-ups and public companies — with a range of complementary services related to IP, M&A, technology transactions, and data rights.
The lawyers join Haynes and Boone from McDermott, Will & Emery LLP, where they were partners in the firm’s San Francisco office. Previously, they served in senior in-house roles at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
“Roger and Jason will be a tremendous asset to our clients and further some of Haynes and Boone’s key strategic priorities, including expanding our presence in California and developing recognized practices serving emerging industries and sectors,” Haynes and Boone Managing Partner Tim Powers said.
Jeff Wolfson, chair of Patent Prosecution at Haynes and Boone, added: “We are excited to have Roger and Jason join us. They add a vital element in the expansion of our Life Sciences capabilities and will help us serve a broader array of clients.”
Haynes and Boone named Roger the chair of its new Precision Medicine and Digital Health Practice Group. He focuses his practice on strategic IP counseling for life sciences clients and has extensive experience in IP strategy and portfolio management, preparation and prosecution, IP litigation, licensing and technology transactions, freedom-to-operate clearances, monetization, and IP due diligence. Prior to finishing his law degree, Roger worked in the life sciences industry for several Fortune 500 pharmaceutical, medical device, and chemical companies.
“I am thrilled to join a firm that has such a great roster of patent prosecution lawyers, as well as an entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative culture,” Roger said. “Haynes and Boone is well-positioned to provide clients in emerging life sciences technologies with a comprehensive suite of skills and services.”
Jason focuses his practice on IP counseling, diligence, procurement, licensing, transactions and portfolio management for clients in the personalized/precision medicine, digital health, life sciences tooling, medical device, and food industries. Before transitioning to the legal industry, Jason was a process engineer for a leading food product company, where he led numerous product and process redesigns, reformulations, and launches.
“Moving to Haynes and Boone gives us a unique opportunity to join a firm with an established patent-prosecution practice that we can help grow to serve a broader range of clients in the precision medicine and digital health fields,” Jason said.
Haynes and Boone plans to soon open a San Francisco office, where Roger and Jason will be based along with other lawyers and staff. Since late March, the firm has added eight other lawyers to its Palo Alto office — led by Partner Roger Royse, an experienced advisor to venture funds, mid-market companies, and technology startups — and Partner Erin Hennessy, an experienced trademark lawyer, to its New York office.
The Haynes and Boone Patent Prosecution and Patent Trials Practice Groups offer sophisticated counseling and portfolio management, representation in post-grant proceedings at the USPTO, and collaboration with the IP Litigation Practice Group to represent clients in federal court litigation and cases before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Managing Intellectual Property named Haynes and Boone as the leading patent prosecution firm in the southern U.S. A 2019 report by Juristat listed Haynes and Boone among the nation’s top-performing patent prosecution firms. The previous year, the company ranked Haynes and Boone No. 2 among the Top 100 Patent Firms in the U.S.
