Profile

Michael J. Smith is a dedicated patent attorney and a part of the firm’s Precision Medicine and Digital Health Practice Group. He takes pride in being uniquely qualified to understand business needs from an intellectual property and patent strategy perspective because of his previous experience working for major life sciences and biopharma companies. Clients value Michael for his strong technical and legal background and his ability to tailor his counsel to the specific legal and business needs of the client.

Michael’s experience is founded on degrees in molecular biology and biophysics which led him to becoming an engineer for a Fortune 500 biopharma company where he helped bring products to market in the nucleotide sequencing space. Michael took his engineering experience to become in-house IP counsel at the same biopharma company where he became the primary point of contact for all intellectual property matters (e.g., IP strategy, IP portfolio management, IP landscaping, FTOs, transactions, etc.) within the business he supported.

Michael has assisted clients on a wide array of issues from support on patent matters to drafting agreements for protecting and exchanging intellectual property rights. Michael also has experience counseling and executing strategies for clients on intellectual properties matters occurring during all aspects of the business cycle.

Currently, Michael uses his past and current experience to protect clients’ intellectual property, provide counseling in intellectual property matters, strategically plan patent portfolios, and put into place legal frameworks for both offensive and defensive legal purposes.

Michael takes his civic responsibilities seriously and has accepted several pro bono representations in non-intellectual property legal matters and is currently an active member of Rotary International.
