American Society of Trial Consultants Recognizes Contribution of Haynes and Boone Trial Services Specialist

DALLAS – Ric Dexter, Haynes and Boone senior trial services specialist, has been awarded the 2013 Pro Bono Award by the American Society of Trial Consultants (ASTC) for his trial consulting and witness preparation assistance to area pro bono attorneys and their clients.

The announcement comes on the heels of another major honor in May when the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers designated Haynes and Boone, LLP Associate Charles Gearing as winner of its 2013 Pro Bono Service Award, which recognizes the public service or legal aid performed by a young lawyer who provides outstanding contributions and access to justice to those in need of legal services.

“These two recognitions really highlight the firm’s commitment to the vast number of individuals and families who are denied proper access to our legal system,” said Alan Wright, co-chair of the firm’s public service committee. “We are proud that both our attorneys and staff have become so active in such important and needed programs.”

Dexter was instrumental in establishing the ASTC DFW Pro Bono Initiative, enlisting the aid of other North Texas trial consultants. “It is no exaggeration to say that they are a critical component of our efforts to literally save lives,” said Bill Holston, executive director of the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas.

Having recently accepted the chairmanship of the national ASTC Pro Bono Committee, Dexter said he is now working to expand the program across the country.

Gearing’s pro bono work includes 500 hours serving as a writ counsel for Juan Lizcano, a Mexican citizen sentenced to death in Texas in 2007 (Case No. W05-59563-S(A) in the 282nd Judicial District of Texas). In that case, working with Dexter, he assisted Haynes and Boone partners in the post-conviction representation of Lizcano, conducting an investigation to identify and collect supporting evidence for writ claims, preparing and presenting witnesses on direct examination, cross-examining witnesses and assisting with the drafting and filing of witness affidavits.
