Attorney Veronica Kayne Joins Haynes and Boone

September 12, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Antitrust practitioner Veronica Kayne has been named Partner in the Washington, D.C. office of international law firm Haynes and Boone, LLP.

For the last five years, Ms. Kayne -- former assistant director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition -- has developed a practice encompassing merger clearance, civil litigation, government non-merger investigations and antitrust counseling. She has represented a wide range of major multinational corporations, including those involved in energy, healthcare, telecommunications and entertainment.

"Veronica's rich knowledge of antitrust matters and acquisitions makes her an ideal addition to our growing Washington office and the antitrust and white collar defense team,” said Barry F. McNeil, senior partner in charge of the Haynes and Boone White Collar, Antitrust and Securities Group. “She brings a wealth of private sector and government experience that will greatly enhance our service to clients. We are privileged to welcome her to our firm."

Ms. Kayne is currently chairman of the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Committee of the Business Law Section and has been a frequent speaker and writer on antitrust law. She is a widely recognized expert on Robinson-Patman cases and ethical issues arising out of mergers and acquisitions.

In recent years, Ms. Kayne has represented Aramark in obtaining US antitrust clearance for several acquisitions, including Wackenhut's correctional food services business and  ServiceMaster's business-to-business facilities services operations.

She also represented Phillips Petroleum in securing FTC clearances first, for its acquisition of Tosco, an independent refiner-marketer, and then for its multi-billion dollar merger with Conoco. Both transactions cleared with consent decrees requiring only minimal divestitures in light of their size and strategic importance.

Ms. Kayne received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and has a Masters in ecology and evolutionary biology from UCLA. She received her J.D. with honors from Villanova University in 1981, where she was an editor of the Villanova Law Review.

Haynes and Boone, LLP is an international law firm with 10 offices throughout Texas, Washington, D.C., Mexico City, Moscow and New York, providing a full spectrum of legal services to clients around the world. With more than 450 attorneys, Haynes and Boone is ranked among the largest law firms in the nation by National Law Journal.  The firm has been recognized as one of the "20 Best Law Firms to Work For" (, 2004), one of the “Best Corporate Law Firms in America” (Corporate Board Member Magazine, 2001-2004) and recipient of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s 2002 Thomas L.
