Press Release

Charlie Beckham Elected Chair of American College of Bankruptcy's 2020 Board of Regents

June 09, 2020
Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Charlie Beckham was elected chair of the American College of Bankruptcy’s 2020 Board of Regents, continuing his service to an organization that he has supported for 20 years. Beckham was inducted into the College as a Fellow in 2000 and has contributed in many ways to the College through the years, including serving as 5th Circuit Regent.

The American College of Bankruptcy is dedicated to enhancing professionalism, scholarship, and service in bankruptcy and insolvency law and practice. Membership in the College is notable. Fellows are U.S. and international insolvency professionals who are selected for having a proven record of the highest standards of expertise, leadership, integrity, professionalism, scholarship, and service to the bankruptcy practice and their communities. The Board of Regents selects new Fellows each year.

Beckham said he considers the Board of Regents chair position “the best job in the College” because the Board is responsible for nominating and selecting qualified candidates to fellowship each year. Beckham previously served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Bankruptcy Foundation. The College Foundation funds projects nationally that improve the quality of bankruptcy law and practice, as well as access to justice.

Ian Peck, chair of Haynes and Boone’s Restructuring Practice Group, commended Beckham on the honor:

“I cannot think of a lawyer who is better-suited to serve as chair of the 2020 Regents of the American College of Bankruptcy,” he said. “Charlie has been actively engaged in the College for many years as both a Fellow and Regent. He has been advising clients on restructuring matters and distressed mergers and acquisitions for over three decades, during which he has developed a proven track record and excellent reputation in the legal industry.”

During his 30-year career, Beckham has represented clients in cases large and small, in courtrooms and boardrooms across the country. He has played a key role in representing secured lenders, creditors’ committees, buyers, debtors and other parties-in-interest in a variety of industries, including numerous oil and gas, midstream, power, and energy-related bankruptcies. He is regularly asked to speak on various bankruptcy matters in the U.S. and internationally. Drawing on his vast depth, skill, and experience in the oil and gas industry, Beckham has presented and published numerous articles on the topic and is often sought out for insights about Haynes and Boone’s energy bankruptcy reports and surveys.

Beckham has received numerous accolades through the years. He is included in the 2020 edition of The Best Lawyers in America directory published by Woodward/White, Inc. He has been consistently recognized by Chambers USA, Chambers & Partners (2011-2020) and Chambers Global, Chambers & Partners (2014-2019), and he was recognized in the 2011-2019 edition of Texas Super Lawyers, published by Thomson Reuters.

Beckham is board-certified in business bankruptcy law by both the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and the American Board of Certification. He actively participates in numerous bankruptcy organizations, including as Chair of the Bankruptcy Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He has served as chair of the Bankruptcy Law Exam Commission of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Beckham is a Fellow of the Houston Bar Foundation, Texas Bar Foundation, and American Bar Foundation. He currently serves on the Chancellor’s Council Executive Committee for The University of Texas System. He is a former president of the 20,000-member Texas Young Lawyers Association, a former member of the Executive Committee of Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas, and former chair of the Council of Chairs for the State Bar of Texas. Beckham also was named the 2010 Distinguished Law Graduate of St. Mary’s University School of Law
