Dallas, Texas – Ernest Martin, Jr., 1998 founder of the Insurance Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, completes his term as the Chairman of the 1,000 plus-member section today.

A partner and chair of the Insurance Litigation Practice of Haynes and Boone, LLP, Martin said, "It is very satisfying to witness the tremendous growth and success of a new section that began as a simple idea two years ago." Martin explains that the idea for a new section, which was shared with James Cornell - now a member of Haynes and Boone’s Houston office - was not initially well received and required overcoming numerous political and bureaucratic obstacles. "The idea, however, quickly caught on and soon many supported the effort." Martin set out to create a section whose members would benefit from a balanced platform of insurer and policyholder interests, and this objective was achieved, in part, by Martin’s appointment of a stellar council which consists of a Texas Supreme Court Justice, a Court of Appeals Justice, an Insurance Law Professor and the top practitioners representing policyholders and insurers throughout the state.

The section continues to attract interest and participation from members of the bar with Martin’s recent creation of numerous Insurance Law committees, which primarily focus on specialty areas of substantive insurance law. Martin explains that these committees will give greater opportunity to a larger number of members and will serve to enhance the practice of insurance law in Texas.

"The fact that more than 1,000 members of the Texas bar have joined the Insurance Law Section in such a short time indicates we had a good idea," Martin added. "And the group will continue to be well served with a strong council in place and with Michael Quinn as the section’s new chair."
