Haynes and Boone Adds Michael Cooper to Energy Practice

DALLAS – Haynes and Boone, LLP has added Michael Cooper as of counsel in its energy and power practice in Dallas.

Mr. Cooper has significant experience in all aspects of corporate representation with a particular focus on the highly regulated oil and gas and energy industries. He was formerly a member of Looper Reed and McGraw in Dallas.

“Michael has extensive experience handling a wide range of transactions and business operations within the oil and gas industry,” said Buddy Clark, Houston-based partner and head of the firm’s energy and power practice. “With his background in accounting and LLM in tax, Michael brings an analytical and practical approach that appeals to business clients.

“Attracting talent with Mike’s degree of knowledge and professionalism is key as we continue to see steady growth in our energy-related practice both nationally and internationally,” Mr. Clark said. “We are thrilled to welcome him to the team.”

Haynes and Boone Corporate Partner Jan Sharry agrees that Mr. Cooper brings an additional depth to the practice, particularly in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. “Michael will be integral to our work with corporate clients in the energy business,” Ms. Sharry said. “He is an experienced oil and gas lawyer who knows the industry and will help as we continue expanding in this sector.”

Mr. Cooper’s practice involves an integrated approach to capital formation, transactions and business operations in the energy industry. He focuses on upstream and midstream oil and gas sectors, including exploration, development, transportation, processing and purchase and sale of oil and gas. His background as a certified public accountant gives Mr. Cooper insight and experience to identify, analyze and address the business and tax consequences attendant to the day-to-day operations of an exploration and production operation or midstream company.

Recent expansion has boosted Haynes and Boone’s Energy and Power Practice Group to more than 75 attorneys across the firm’s 12 offices. Last month, the firm added seasoned energy attorney Robert Temple to its Washington, D.C. office to focus on nuclear energy operations, transactions, development and regulatory matters.

Haynes and Boone’s energy practice takes advantage of its strong foothold in energy-centric Texas markets while maximizing the firm’s international reach and cross-border capabilities. Lawyers in the group have diverse experience ranging from traditional energy to alternative and renewable energy resources. A recent study showed Haynes and Boone lawyer’s were involved in one-third of all domestic oil and gas M&A transactions tracked by the Oil and Gas Financial Journal during the 30-day period from December 15, 2009 through January 15, 2010, with an aggregate value of more than $1 billion.
