DALLAS— Haynes and Boone LLP, a major U.S. law firm, announced that, starting this year, it will award up to four scholarships per year, two at the SMU Dedman School of Law and two at the University of Texas School of Law, to outstanding first year minority law students.

Each Haynes and Boone Scholar will receive a  monthly stipend to be spent on tuition, books or living expenses. He or she also will work at Haynes and Boone as a summer associate for six to eight weeks, during the summer following the first year of law school. In addition, the firm will implement a mentoring program for the students during their first year of law school. As the program develops, past Haynes and Boone Minority Scholars will be asked to participate in the mentoring program. Haynes and Boone’s total costs for this program are expected to exceed $75,000 per year.

“Diversity is a major consideration in the legal profession,” said John Attanasio, Dean of the SMU Dedman School of Law. “Programs such as this can help us attract more top-quality students to Texas law schools and  eventually Texas law firms.”

Reflecting its strong commitment to diversity, Haynes and Boone recently received the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s prestigious 2002 Thomas L. Sager Award for the Southwest Region. This award is given annually to a law firm that demonstrates a sustained commitment  to improve the hiring, retention, and promotion of minority and women attorneys. In furtherance of that commitment, the Haynes and Boone Scholars Program is aimed at attracting outstanding minority students to SMU and the University of Texas while at the same time helping these students succeed in law school.

“The Haynes and Boone Scholars Program offers financial aid and real world experience,” said Bill Powers, Dean of the UT School of Law. “It gives deserving students an opportunity to develop professionally early on.”
