WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kenneth B. Reisenfeld, a partner with Haynes and Boone LLP, was recently honored by the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area with a Community Human Rights Award in recognition of Mr. Reisenfeld’s commitment to international law and the protection of human rights.

Mr. Reisenfeld, who just completed his term as Chair of the American Bar Association’s 14,000 member Section of International Law, received the award on December 9, 2005, in a ceremony at the U.S. House of Representatives hosted by U.S. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton.

The award honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to and have had a measurable  impact on the rule of law or the institutional basis for protecting human rights worldwide.  As Chair of the ABA’s International Law Section, Mr. Reisenfeld established and oversaw the work of an ABA Task Force which prepared an authoritative study of the U.N. Human Rights Commission and recommended its replacement by a high-level Human Rights Council in order to better protect human rights.  The Task Force’s recommendations were adopted as ABA policy in June 2005, and have become an important source document for discussions between the member states of the United Nations during their recent considerations of institutional reforms.

On July 21, 2005, Mr. Reisenfeld submitted testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on these recommendations to reform the U.N. Human Rights Commission.

Upon receiving this Award, Mr. Reisenfeld said:  “I am extremely honored to receive this prestigious Award.  The Task Force, chaired by Ambassador David Birenbaum, worked diligently for nearly a year and one-half to produce meaningful and achievable recommendations for reform of the human rights activities at the United Nations.  We have been delighted by the positive reception to our ABA proposals by bar associations around the world and by the member states themselves.  We firmly believe that fundamental reform of the U.N. Human Rights Commission is long overdue.”
