HOUSTON – Five senior associates from the law firm Haynes and Boone LLP recently found themselves  arguing misdemeanor criminal cases in Houston’s Municipal Courts.

Rather than trying to escape criminal penalties, however, the lawyers were honing their trial skills while on loan to the Houston Municipal Courts for a 20-week stint as volunteer city prosecutors .  Brian Michael Cooper, Michael Chu, Matthew Deffebach, Stephen Maddex, and Marty Thompson recently finished their tenure in the program, after trying more than 90 cases – around 70 of which were full jury trials.

Haynes and Boone provided the attorneys on a pro bono basis, and recently sent five others – Jessica Freedson, Yasser Madriz, Greg McEldowney, C.E. Rhodes,  and Bane Phillipi – into the courtroom battlefield for another 20-week term.

Attorneys begin the program with a week of training, then handle Municipal Court trials once a week for 20 weeks under the supervision of city prosecutors.

Haynes and Boone was one of the first firms to support the program, which began in 2005.  The first Haynes and Boone attorneys began their stint with the city in January.

“This program is a classic win-win:  it provides, at no cost,  additional prosecutors to the City  and trial  experience for young lawyers,” said Michael J. Mazzone, a partner in Haynes and Boone’s trial and litigation  practice who is  one of the champions of the program at the firm.  “There are very few large law firms whose associates can get  this kind of trial experience.”

Houston’s Municipal Courts are some of the busiest  in the U.S, dealing with approximately 1.3 million citations per year.
