Haynes and Boone Houston Honored for Service to Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program

HOUSTON – The Houston Bar Foundation has honored Haynes and Boone, LLP for its significant contributions and service to the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program (HVLP).

“It is gratifying to be included among the handful of firms receiving an Outstanding Contribution Award,” said Ken Broughton, administrative partner in Haynes and Boone’s Houston office. “Our firm places a strong emphasis on giving back to the community. Programs like HVLP are a constant reminder that volunteering makes us better as individuals and as a firm.”

In 2009, Haynes and Boone pledged to take a minimum of 25 pro bono cases from the HVLP program, which provides pro bono legal services to low-income Harris County men and women. Projects included sponsoring a Saturday legal advice clinic and providing ongoing legal representation to 14 HVLP applicants. The firm also helped staff the annual HBA Will-A-Thon program, which assists low-income seniors in preparing will and estate planning documents.

According to HVLP staff members, Haynes and Boone's volunteers demonstrate an overwhelming willingness to offer assistance when its needed, including taking cases ranging from divorce to veterans assistance to bankruptcy and asylum matters. The Houston office also hosts a continuing legal education program to educate its attorneys about opportunities to give back through HVLP.

In addition to its HVLP docket, Haynes and Boone’s Houston office also handles pro bono matters as national counsel for Justice for Children and in political asylum cases.
