AUSTIN— Dane George, Of Counsel with Haynes and Boone, LLP, passed away suddenly on Feb. 4 of an apparent heart attack. He was 53.

"Dane exhibited a great combination  of perseverance, evenhandedness, calmness and cheerfulness, in addition to his stellar legal abilities. These and other qualities made him a tremendous asset to the firm and a fun person with whom to work," said Jeff King, managing partner of the firm’s Austin office.

George had more than 25 years of legal counseling and representation in corporate and business matters. His practice at Haynes and Boone included representation of start-ups and early stage technology companies, venture capital financings, public offerings, private placements, going private transactions, SEC compliance, negotiated mergers and acquisitions and counseling corporate boards on fiduciary duties. George also served as a mentor for some of the firm’s new associates.

"Dane was an excellent lawyer and great mentor with an incredible knowledge of the securities laws.  As a mentor, Dane stressed the importance of fairness in negotiations and dealings with clients and opposing counsel alike and precision and accuracy in drafting agreements," said Debra Hatter, an Austin associate.

Prior to working for Haynes and Boone, George was a partner in the El Paso office of Kemp Smith, P.C., where he played a lead role in the firm’s corporate and securities practice.

George lived in Austin with his wife, Susan George and his daughters, Stacy George and Kylie George. He is also survived by his mother, grandmother, two brothers, sister and his wife’s mother and father.

George earned his B.S.B.A. in banking and finance from the University of Arkansas. He earned his J.D. with high honors from the University of Texas School of Law. Honorary memberships included Chancellor and Order of the Coif.
