NEW YORK – Building on its recognition in the financial services community and the U.S. bankruptcy bar, Haynes and Boone, LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices in Texas, Mexico City and Washington, D.C., recently opened its New York office.  The New York office, located at 399 Park Avenue, will grow into a full-service office supporting clients in the areas of finance, bankruptcy, corporate/securities, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, tax, energy and general corporate work.

The New York office is headed by long-term Haynes and Boone partners, Kenneth Bezozo, Co-Chair of the firm’s Business Transactions Section, and Judith Elkin, Co-Chair of the firm’s Finance Section.  Mr. Bezozo, who is a corporate tax lawyer, and Ms. Elkin, who is a bankruptcy partner, are both New York natives.  They are joined by two new partners – John Morrison, formerly a partner at Shearman & Sterling, and Gilbert Porter, formerly the Co-Chair of the Global Finance Practice Group and the Project Finance Practice Group of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

Mr. Morrison joins Haynes and Boone after having practiced law for more than 20 years at New York’s Shearman & Sterling.  Mr. Morrison represents both issuer and financial institution clients in a wide range of capital markets financings and securitizations.  Mr. Morrison’s focus for several years has been on securitizations, structured financings of capital-intensive equipment and public and private securities offerings.  Most recently, he has been sought after for innovative highly-structured financings of commercial aircraft, including aircraft lease portfolio securitizations and enhanced agreement trust certificates.  In his move to Haynes and Boone, Mr. Morrison brings with him Francesca Cinotti, a former associate at Shearman & Sterling.

Mr. Porter will continue to focus on his international and project finance practices, specializing in transactions involving the energy, power, telecommunications and other regulated industries and technology-based companies.  Mr. Porter’s practice involves both OECD and emerging markets, with substantial experience over the last 27 years representing lenders, investors and major corporations in more than 35 countries across the Americas, Asia, Eastern and Western Europe and South Africa.  Mr. Porter is a recognized leader in the area of project finance and infrastructure development, having played a prominent role in the development of the project finance model used in the U.S. independent power industry, its expansion into the de-regulated era of the 1990s, its translation to other industries and infrastructure, and the special challenges of emerging markets.  In his move to Haynes and Boone, Mr. Porter brings with him Ann Richardson, a former Gibson, Dunn associate.

“We are delighted that we have been joined by attorneys with the reputations for excellence and innovation that John Morrison and Gil Porter have earned,” says Mr. Bezozo.  “With their help we will continue to attract other partners and associates who share our passion for excellent client service and vision for the New York office, and for the Firm as a whole.”

The addition of Mr. Morrison and Mr. Porter reflects two elements of the strategy that Haynes and Boone has decided upon in the growth of its New York office.

First, both Mr. Morrison and Mr. Porter provide access to the wealth of financial structuring opportunities and products that are the source of attracting clients conducting business in New York.  Second, each reflects a considered decision by Haynes and Boone to build the New York office with painstaking care - not through merger, but instead through careful selection of individual practitioners and cohesive practice groups that share the collegial and entrepreneurial spirit, and dedication to quality service, for which Haynes and Boone is well known.

Haynes and Boone, LLP is a law firm with nine offices throughout Texas, Washington, D.C., Mexico City and New York, providing a full spectrum of legal services to clients around the world.  With more than 450 attorneys, Haynes and Boone is ranked among the largest law firms in the nation by National Law Journal.  The firm has been recognized as one of the “20 Best Law Firms to Work For” (Vault.com, 2004), one of the “Best Corporate Law Firms in America” (Corporate Board Member Magazine, 2001-2003) and was the recipient of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s 2002 Thomas L. Sager Award for Commitment to diversity.
