Justice M.B. "Murry" Cohen Retires from First Court of Appeals to Join Haynes and Boone, LLP

HOUSTON – Judge M.B. “Murry” Cohen, Senior Justice of the First Court of Appeals, will join Haynes and Boone’s Houston office as Partner in its Appellate Section.  Cohen, who has served 20 years as a highly respected appellate judge, consistently has won high rankings by his peers in the legal profession.  In the 2001 Houston Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Poll, he was ranked first among 29 state appellate judges.  In 1997 and 1999 he was ranked first of all the state trial and appellate judges, covered by the survey.

Throughout his judicial career, Judge Cohen has been actively involved in service to his profession and community.  He served as an Adjunct Professor at both the University of Houston Law Center and South Texas College of Law, where he taught seminars in appellate advocacy and procedure.  He chaired the State Bar of Texas’ Committee on Judicial Ethics and was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Center for the Judiciary, Inc.  He is a highly sought after speaker at continuing legal education seminars.  In addition, Judge Cohen is a member of the Southwest Regional Advisory Board of the Anti-Defamation League, and he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Congregation Beth Yeshurun.

Judge Cohen graduated from George Washington University in 1967.  In 1972, he completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Texas, where he was named the law school’s “Outstanding Advocate” by the Texas Supreme Court.
