Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Lynne Liberato on Thursday night was named the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime of Excellence in Advocacy Award from the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists (TACTAS).
Liberato was selected through a vote of the entire TACTAS membership, all of whom are board certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Liberato was chosen for this year’s award because of her outstanding appellate work and advocacy over the course of her career. Prior winners of this distinguished award include, most recently, Justice Alice Oliver-Parrott and Attorneys Kenneth Tekell and Robin Gibbs.
“This award is added testimony to Lynne’s significant achievements on behalf of her clients and her contributions to the legal industry, including her legal scholarship as author of numerous law review articles and her contributions to the community through her United Way leadership,” said Haynes and Boone Litigation Section head and TACTAS member Michael Mazzone.
Appropriately, Liberato received the Lifetime of Excellence award on Nov. 19 during an online TACTAS event titled “Lady Justice: Women of the Court.” The event featured a panel of four women who serve on state Supreme Courts discussing effective and ethical advocacy, as well as the role of women in the judiciary and their own paths to their states’ highest courts. Liberato is recognized by Chambers USA, Chambers and Partners, as one of the leading practitioners in Texas for Appellate (2009-2020). In May, the Houston Bar Association named her as a winner of the 2020 Justice Ruby Kless Sondock Award for her outstanding accomplishments. Last year, the Texas Bar Foundation presented her with the Gregory S. Coleman Outstanding Texas Appellate Lawyer Award, which each year celebrates one distinguished appellate lawyer who has an outstanding practice and demonstrates a commitment to mentoring young attorneys and providing legal services to the underserved.
Also last year, the State Bar of Texas’s Board of Directors named her as its sole appointee to the Texas Commission on Judicial Selection, a legislatively-created 15-member commission tasked with making recommendations to the legislature on how Texas should select its judges. Liberato previously served as president of the State Bar of Texas and was the first woman president of the Houston Bar Association.
A prolific speaker and legal writer, Liberato also co-authors with Judge David Hittner "Summary Judgments in Texas," often called the "bible" of summary judgments. Versions of the article have appeared in seven law reviews since 1989, and it has been recognized as one of the 10 most-cited articles by appellate courts nationwide.
Liberato will be formally recognized with the Lifetime of Excellence in Advocacy Award at a future event.
