Nina Cortell Receives 2012 UT Law School Distinguished Alumnus Award

DALLASNina Cortell, Haynes and Boone, LLP appellate partner and a founding member of the Center for Women in Law at the University of Texas School of Law, has been named recipient of the law school alumni association’s Distinguished Alumnus Award for Community Service. Established by the Alumni Association in 1988, the award honors an outstanding graduate who brings conspicuous credit to the legal profession by exemplary service. Cortell was honored in ceremonies held recently in Austin.

“We are pleased and proud to recognize Nina’s many accomplishments and to count her among the most distinguished members of The University of Texas School of Law community,” said Stefanie A. Lindquist, interim dean.

Managing Partner Terry Conner said Cortell’s commitment to mentoring young lawyers, particularly women lawyers, should serve as a model for others who follow in the profession. “Nina is tireless and passionate about guiding young people along an inspired career path,” Conner said. “She is famous for that inside our firm, of course, so it is especially gratifying to see her recognized with such a prominent award from the school.”

Cortell serves on the Executive Committee of the Center for Women in Law and is President of the Texas Law Review Association, Trustee of the Center for American and International Law, and former chair of the State Bar Task Force on Hiring, Retention and Promotion of Women and Minorities in Law Firms and Corporations.

Numerous publications rank her one of the top appellate lawyers in Texas. In 2009, Cortell was named Outstanding Lawyer of the Year by the Dallas Bar Association.  During the course of her 36-year career at Haynes and Boone, LLP, she has represented corporations, individuals, and public entities in appeals that have put her at the forefront of Texas appellate practice.

She frequently speaks on appellate topics and has been asked by the federal and state judiciary to assist with issues related to judicial process, including her work on the prestigious Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee.  She is a fellow in the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, a member of the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee, and a member of the American Law Institute.
