Rafael Anchia of Haynes and Boone Named Aspen Ideas Scholar

DALLASRafael Anchia, Texas state representative and a corporate finance attorney with Haynes and Boone, LLP, has been named to the roster of the 2009 Aspen Ideas Festival Scholars, a group of leaders selected for their accomplishments and “ability to transform ideas into action.”

The 60 scholars - nominated by trustees, senior members of the Aspen Institute staff, past scholars and advisors - were hosted at the recent Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. Staged by the Aspen Institute and The Atlantic magazine, the event featured an array of lectures, presentations, debates and panel discussions by leading thinkers.

The Aspen Institute’s mission is to “foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues.”

“It was truly an honor to be added to this prestigious group of forward-thinking individuals,” Mr. Anchia said. “The experience was positively exhilarating. The knowledge on display was vast. It was a joy to take part in this refreshing exchange among the world’s brightest thought leaders.”

Mr. Anchia was elected as the Texas State Representative for House District 103 in November 2004 and has served in two sessions of the State Legislature. During his service in the legislature, he has worked on legislation to fight crime, improve public safety, protect the environment and improve health coverage for women and children.

In November 2006, Mr. Anchia won unanimous re-election to the board of directors, and was chosen chairman of the board, of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund for a three-year term. NALEO is the leading organization that facilitates full Latino participation in the American political process, from citizenship to public service. Rafael began his public service at the local level where he was twice elected to the board of trustees of the Dallas Independent School District - the nation's 12th largest.
