Super Lawyers Texas Rising Stars Spotlights Two Haynes and Boone Litigators, Honors 48 Others

DALLAS – Haynes and Boone, LLP partners Mark Trachtenberg and Sarah Teachout were selected by Super Lawyers Texas Rising Stars among 12 outstanding young lawyers featured in Thomson Reuters’ annual award publication. An additional 48 firm attorneys also were listed as top young lawyers in Texas.

Mr. Trachtenberg, an appellate litigator in the firm’s Houston office, was featured for his work to transform Texas public school finance. The case resulted in new legislation that infused an estimated $2 billion into the state’s school finance system and created additional capacity for districts to raise revenue in the short term.

Appellate Partner Nina Cortell argued with Mr. Trachtenberg before the Texas Supreme Court in the case. “Mark’s depth of knowledge about the intricacies of school finance, combined with his tremendous skills as an advocate, was critical to our success in the school finance litigation,” Ms. Cortell said. “There was simply no one better to represent the interests of the school districts.”

Mrs. Teachout dedicated seven years to a pro bono defense case that freed two wrongly convicted Mexican nationals serving life sentences for the murder of a Panhandle convenience store clerk. Haynes and Boone provided a team of four, including lead partners Barry McNeil and Ron Breaux, and invested nearly $2.5 million in the case. Alberto Sifuentes and Jesus Ramirez were released in 2009 after 12 years in prison.

“It was the case of a lifetime,” said Mrs. Teachout, whose regular practice focuses on white collar defense. The Sifuentes-Ramirez case convinced her more needs to be done to clean up wrongful prosecutions in Texas state courts.
