Albert Tan Interviews Vicky Du, Global Head of Fund Finance at Standard Chartered Bank, About Her Career Journey as an Asian Immigrant

04/06/2021

Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Albert Tan moderated and led a discussion on March 25 with Vicky Du, Global Head of Fund Finance at Standard Chartered Bank. This inaugural speaker series event was hosted by the Fund Finance Association’s (FFA) Diversity in Fund Finance Group.

Tan talked to Du about her journey as an immigrant to the United States to achieve her career ambitions and how she learned to thrive amidst adversities she faced as a Chinese immigrant to the U.S. This was the first event in FFA’s Diversity in Fund Finance Boundary Breakers Speakers series, which is aimed at having open conversations with senior leaders in fund finance to give voice to unique issues and perspectives faced by diverse professionals, and how we can challenge ourselves to think outside established biases and stereotypes.

“I was thrilled to talk to Vicky about her personal journey to the US and advancement in her professional life and to hear her valuable insights on overcoming adversities and obstacles in her career to become the global head of fund finance at Standard Chartered Bank. This event was especially important for minority professionals, in particularly Asian American professionals, to hear perspectives and encouragements from senior AAPI leaders at a time of rising hate crimes, discrimination and prejudice against Asian Americans,” said Tan, co-chair of Haynes and Boone’s Fund Finance Practice Group.

In 2020, Tan moderated a discussion hosted by the firm about how to address the post-pandemic rise in attacks against people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. To listen to the podcast recording of this discussion, click here.

Tan is a Partner and Co-Head of the Global Fund Financing Group with Haynes and Boone, LLP. Additionally, he serves as a member of the firm’s (i) 6-person Appointments Committee, which appoints and oversees the firm’s strategic leadership and management roles, (ii) Board of Directors, (iii) Partners Compensation Committee and (iv) Strategic Growth Committee.

The National Law Journal selected him to its inaugural 35-person list of Finance, Banking and Capital Markets Trailblazers in 2019, and Euromoney Expert Guides, and Euromoney Institutional Investor 2012, listed him as a “Leading Practitioner” in its Guide to Leading Practitioners: International Private Equity, United States. In recognition of Albert’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, the State Bar of Texas’s Asian Pacific Interest Section in 2015 recognized Albert with its “Justice Wellington Chew Award,” for the outstanding achievements, commitment, and leadership of a lawyer who has paved the way for the advancement of other Asian Pacific American attorneys and made substantial and lasting contributions to the APA legal profession, as well as the broader APA community.
