Texas Defender Service Honors Debbie McComas with Light of Justice Award

HOUSTON – Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Debbie McComas has been awarded the Texas Defender Service (TDS) Light of Justice Award, honoring lawyers who have provided pro bono representation in death penalty cases.

TDS is non-profit organization established in 1995 by experienced Texas death penalty attorneys. TDS aims to improve the quality of representation afforded to those facing a death sentence and to expose and eradicate the systemic flaws plaguing the Texas death penalty.

At the firm, McComas serves as co-chair of the firm’s Pro Bono/Public Service Committee and is a partner in the firm’s Appellate Practice Group.

At Haynes and Boone, the firm-wide Pro Bono / Public Service Committee was formed more than 20 years ago to coordinate pro bono legal work and other public service opportunities and match them to lawyers and staff. The committee includes associates and partners, and the encouragement of pro bono service is reflected in the fact that more than 70 percent of associates and about 40 percent of partners regularly undertake pro bono work.

McComas was honored at an awards luncheon at the Hilton Americas-Houston.
