Tim Powers Named Next Managing Partner of Haynes and Boone

DALLAS – Tim Powers has been named to succeed Terry Conner as managing partner of Haynes and Boone, LLP, as of Jan. 1, 2015. Powers will be the firm’s fourth managing partner in its 44-year history.

Through his 34 years of practice, Powers has been key in developing the firm’s international banking, finance and real estate investment practices. Powers has served in a variety of leadership roles, including practice chair, marketing partner, head of the firm’s lateral partner recruiting efforts and as a member of the board of directors.

Outgoing Managing Partner Conner, who joined the firm in 1975 and helped lead the effort to build Haynes and Boone’s international finance practice, reflected on the transition. “It has been my honor to serve as the firm’s managing partner for the last six years, and I look forward to working closely with Tim to transition leadership responsibilities at this great firm during the balance of 2014,” he said. “Our firm can expect Tim to provide a clear vision and leadership during a time of significant change in our profession.” Conner will continue to serve as part of Haynes and Boone’s leadership team focusing on overall firm strategy, institutional client relations, and community service.

Said Powers: “I have had the great privilege of working alongside Terry for more than 30 years and have seen his commitment to sound management built on a powerful ‘client first mentality’ foundation. We will build on this legacy, which has served us so well. I commit to our clients, our partners and our employees that the firm will continue to grow, prosper and provide effective client-driven legal services.”

Conner’s tenure included an unprecedented period of growth and expansion at the firm. While the demand for global legal services declined after 2008, Haynes and Boone revenues increased by nearly $50 million and the firm’s lawyer headcount increased by nearly 70 lawyers. Indeed, year-to-date performance indicates that the firm will likely report record revenues for 2014. Moreover, under Conner the firm’s footprint grew remarkably. After 2008, the firm added offices in California, the New York office quadrupled in size, and the firm’s global capabilities grew substantially to meet client demand.

While Haynes and Boone was founded in Dallas, it has implemented a strategic expansion plan that has resulted in more than 150 firm attorneys working today on the East and West coasts and in Latin America.

Powers, like Conner, is a member of the firm’s renowned finance section. He has been with the law firm almost his entire legal career, which began when he graduated from the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.

He is a past chair of the State Bar of Texas International Law Section and has held numerous leadership positions in the International Bar Association, where he serves as its foundation’s president and trustee. His other professional activities have included chair of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, and chair and board member of the World Services Group.

As a finance lawyer, Powers helped build Haynes and Boone into a national leader in representation of U.S. and foreign commercial and investment banks in capital commitment subscription financings for private equity funds in North America, Europe and Asia. To date, Powers has represented major U.S. and foreign lenders as lead agents and arrangers in more than $50 billion of such subscription financings.

Powers is consistently ranked in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, as one of the Best Lawyers in America, and was named the 2007 Texas Top-Notch Lawyer in International Law by the Texas Lawyer magazine.

In the community, Powers serves as a member of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Board of Directors, as Chair of Crossroads Community Services, the urban outreach of First United Methodist Church of Dallas, and as a board member of the Dallas Breakfast Group. He is a former trustee of First United Methodist Church of Dallas, and is past chair of the Town North Family YMCA.
