Dallas Business Journal Guest Article: Health Care Reform: The 12 Step Guide


By now, most employers are aware that they may be subject to a penalty beginning in 2014 with respect to their group health plans. Employers may also understand that their group health plans will need to be amended, additional disclosures will need to be made, and new taxes and fees will be taking effect.

The danger is that this general understanding, in an area of the law that most employers have not paid much attention to until now, leads employers to a false confidence that they are, and will continue to be, in compliance with health care reform. Employers must develop and implement a plan now for avoiding, or strategically paying, the employer penalty regarding health care coverage, and ensuring required action items do not fall through the cracks.

Below is a checklist for employers that average at least 50 full-time or “full-time equivalent” employees during the year, covering just the provisions of health care reform that require action in 2013.
