When clients call Haynes and Boone, LLP's Adrian Azer, it's usually to tap his insurance recovery expertise to help resolve a thorny damage claim. It's not the kind of call he hopes to get, however, in his new capacity as leader of the firm's Washington, D.C., office.

"Candidly, I hope my area expertise doesn't come to fruition in any way, because that means something bad has happened," Azer told Law360 Pulse in a recent interview. "There's certainly a component of my practice that is risk management [that] … hopefully will never have application to this role, which I am somewhat grateful for."

Haynes Boone named Azer D.C. managing partner on Jan. 18. Azer joined Haynes Boone as counsel in 2017 from Gilbert LLP, and he was made a partner with the firm in 2020. …

Azer spoke with Law360 Pulse about working on commercial litigation matters when starting his career at Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP, his reflections on being named to firm leadership and his goals for the D.C. office. Responses have been edited for length and clarity.

What are your thoughts on being named managing partner in D.C.?

It's such an honor and a privilege. To be selected for a leadership role is a true vote of confidence from the firm, and I take that seriously. It's obviously something I appreciate and want to make sure I do well.

I've been thinking about how I ended up here. When I came to Haynes Boone, I was a counsel, and I always wanted to be a partner. Eventually, I got that vote of confidence to be made partner. And now being asked to take a leadership role — it's great. It has required a lot of work, but it's certainly something I value, and I feel a huge sense of obligation to give back to the office and really make good on the charge I've been given.
