Habinsky in Law360: New Worker Protections in 2024

January 02, 2024
Haynes and Boone, LLP Partner Jason Habinsky was quoted in a Law360 article on employers and employees settling into a landscape with more protections for workers all over the U.S. in 2024.

"I think California and New York have become trendsetters in some respects with respect to these protected categories," said Haynes and Boone LLP partner Jason Habinsky, who represents employers.

Referring to New York City's new ban on discrimination based on height or weight, Habinsky said, "I do see that there's often a domino effect of states expanding protections like this, and then other states say, 'Well, we don't have this,' or 'This is an issue here as well.'"

The ban went into effect just after Thanksgiving, and the city is expected to issue regulations interpreting the law next year.

"Many decision-makers, executives, human resources professionals, may not be keyed into the fact that when you're interviewing someone, you can't react based upon what they look like, what their size is," Habinsky said, adding that "New York, whether it's the city or the state, [is] moving at a quick pace to expand who's protected under the law."
