Leading Global Credit Risk Management Lawyer Giorgio Bovenzi Joins Haynes and Boone’s New York Office

03/07/2019

Giorgio Bovenzi has joined Haynes and Boone, LLP as a partner in the Finance Practice Group in New York, bringing decades of experience advising clients on global credit risk management and cross-border insolvency issues.

A native of Italy and veteran of leading Wall Street law firms, Bovenzi has deep knowledge of the commercial and insolvency laws in many countries worldwide and focuses on providing global credit risk advice by reconciling the differences in credit, bank regulatory, and insolvency rules among civil-law and common-law jurisdictions. Some of the world’s largest global banks routinely retain Bovenzi to help them assess credit and insolvency risk on cross-border transactions.

“My global credit practice identifies client risk in transactions (with a specific focus on qualified financial contracts) that are connected to two or more jurisdictions and are subject to the overlapping authority of different commercial and insolvency laws,” he said. “I am thrilled to join Haynes and Boone because it has built deep relationships with leading banks that I already assist. The firm’s prestigious Finance Practice perfectly complements my skills and experience.”

Bovenzi said he also was drawn to Haynes and Boone’s culture. “My closest clients were complimentary of Haynes and Boone’s impeccable record of client-centric service and commitment to institutionalizing client relationships, stating that the firm’s lawyers openly collaborate and are a delight to work with. I have experienced a comparably inclusive and collegial culture while at other firms and know that it is a key contributor to a firm’s success and client satisfaction.”

Bovenzi comes to Haynes and Boone from Dentons, where he was a partner in the firm’s Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy practice. He also co-chaired Denton’s Financial Institutions Sector and the Innovation & Technology Working Group. After practicing commercial litigation in Italy for six years, he began his U.S. career at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP more than 20 years ago, where his bankruptcy litigation experience was highly formative. He later worked for about a decade at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, where he helped develop the firm’s global credit risk management expertise into a practice. Bovenzi has also represented global financial institutions, multi-national debtors, and investors in multi-jurisdictional insolvency, out-of-court restructuring, and distressed-asset acquisition matters in which his global credit risk experience proved instrumental.

“Some of our leading clients have worked with Giorgio for many years and know first-hand the keen advice he provides on cross-border transactions,” said Haynes and Boone Managing Partner Tim Powers. “He will be an incredible asset to our clients and the firm. He could not fit in more perfectly with our client-first orientation.”

Haynes and Boone Finance Partner Craig Unterberg, managing partner of the New York office, said Bovenzi comes on board at a particularly opportune time, following recent growth in the New York office and the recent opening of the firm’s Charlotte office, which will form an integral part of the firm’s global Finance Practice.

“Giorgio greatly bolsters the depth and breadth of services we can offer financial institutions and will help us further grow our already-strong Finance Practice,” Unterberg said.

Haynes and Boone’s Finance Practice Group has handled hundreds of deals worldwide in recent years. The firm structures new and sophisticated financing vehicles that fit the business needs of its clients, and it brings together lenders and borrowers to make deals. The group’s lawyers are recognized for their successful work for commercial lenders such as Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Wells Fargo, Citibank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Royal Bank of Scotland, as well as their work with domestic and foreign borrowers, regional banks and financial institutions, investment banks, non-bank credit companies, vendors, financial sponsors, private equity funds, hedge funds, venture capital funds and other investment funds.

The Loan Pricing Corporation Law Firm League Tables, a national ranking of law firms handling syndicated loan transactions on behalf of lead arrangers, agents, or borrowers, has consistently ranked Haynes and Boone among the top 15 firms in the U.S. in terms of total volume of syndicated loans handled by the firm on behalf of lenders.
